The turkey dinner was a success.

Hubs warned me when I bought the turkey that he did not like turkey. At all. I just laughed- I mean, who does not like turkey? Really?! Is that even possible? It turns out that my husband is not simply a funny man, he really meant what he said. He’d never had turkey that he liked, and he hates turkey.

Well, at least we had people coming over so I wouldn’t be forced to eat a 20 pound turkey all by myself, I thought.

Boy, was I wrong.

Hubs has made himself sick two days in a row now gorging on turkey. GORGING. He eats until it hurts and then whines because he wants to eat more and he can’t. He’s been complaining he can’t get into a comfortable position to sleep at night because his stomach hurts.

HAH. Victory! My cooking, 1 vs. his picky eating, 0.

How did I do it? I put butter and bacon under the skin so it wouldn’t get dried out, I put foil on the wing tips and the leg tips so they, also, would not get dried out. When I pulled it out of the oven, I let it rest for 20 minutes so that the bird would re-absorb its delicious juices while cooling a bit before I carved it. With turkey it’s all about keeping the meat juicy and moist, and that did it! It was amazing!

The food all went over well, very well. I’m super happy about it.

Today we baked cookies together. I love being in the kitchen, laughing and cooking with hubs. It was pretty great, and now the house smells like oatmeal cookies and double chocolate cookies! Both recipes are in my much beloved, much battered Joy of Cooking. We’re going to go play D&D at a friends house and it never hurts when meeting a new group of gamer nerds to show up with baked goods!
